What have I been up to?

I haven’t posted here on Wild Pacific Northwest since September. I assure you that I will be back at it soon.

The reason I haven’t posted is a really, really good one: I’ve been super busy starting my own business!

It’s a nature tour business called Volcano Lands, based in Portland, Oregon. My good friend Laura and I are co-owners and we’ll both be working as naturalist guides on tours.

Our first tours roll out in March and I am crazy excited. The Columbia River Gorge, the Oregon Coast, wildflowers, birds, geology, waterfalls… we’re doing it all!

I want to create a new website design for Wild Pacific Northwest, and that project is a little daunting. It’ll be fun, but potentially really time-consuming.

In any case, I want to get back to writing articles about the glorious natural history of the Pacific Northwest. I love this website and look forward to taking it to the next level.

In the meantime, please check out the website I built for Volcano Lands and consider joining me on a nature tour!

Ivan, how exciting for you! Congrats on your new business, sounds like a dream job. I’ll definitely check out your new website and hope to make one of your trips (and of course blog about it) in the year ahead.

    Cheers, jill

Thanks, Jill! I really appreciate your support over the last few years. And you should definitely come on a tour. That would be fantastic!

I had been wondering when a new blog post would come. Thankfully I decided to browse my RSS feeds today, and found this.

My sincerest congratulations on your business start up, and moving toward living your dreams! It always makes me very happy to see people doing what they love, being all that they can be, and positively impacting others and the world. Best wishes to you and your business.

I had posted on your blog a couple times a long time ago, about bird photography. I am still working toward my dream to be a professional nature photographer, and seeing you start up your business is a positive dose of motivation. You can see some of my pics at my flickr link.

As I am a nature photographer, in the PNW (WA), I could definitely see going on a tour with you! I will keep an eye on your offerings and on my schedule / finances. Perhaps in the future I can contact you about my interests and we could discuss a personal tour.

Congrats again, and keep at it!

Yes, I remember you! Your photography is kick-ass! Thanks for the encouragement. Your kind words really put a smile on my face.

We’d love to take you out on a personal tour. Just let us know when you’re ready!

Only time will tell if our new business is successful, but I have to say that since I made the decision to take the leap, I have been SO excited, happy, and energized. It really feels good to be doing something that I’m passionate about! So I say go for it!

Awesome, thanks for the reply! Thanks for the nice comment about my photos :D and I am glad that what I said gave you a smile.

“since I made the decision to take the leap, I have been SO excited, happy, and energized. It really feels good to be doing something that I’m passionate about!”

That is EXACTLY how I felt the day I made the decision to follow my dream of being a photographer. It is my opinion that when someone feels this way, it’s a good indication that they are on the correct path.

Based on everything you are doing and what you’re telling me, I am sure your business will be very successful. The passion and seriousness is what gives people like us the edge. Finally, remember, there is no failure, there is only learning. The only way to fail is to give up.

        I will stay in touch!

          You’re cool, Matt.

Yeah, even if my new business doesn’t end up working out, I’m learning a lot and I feel good about taking the chance to do what I love.

Wonderful business idea, I’m sure it will be a great success! Your blog is a great resource, thanks!

Ivan, congratulations on your new business! I hope it is successful. I went and looked at your new website and it looks like you are going to have some amazing experiences for people here in the Portland area.

I received information about this journal today and it reminded me of your blog. I would submit, but I am more of a natural history writer, not strictly science/biological writing: http://www.eaglehill.us/programs/journals/urna/urban-naturalist.shtml

Anyway, hope you’re well and good luck on your exciting endeavors.

Thanks very much, Katie! That Urban Naturalist journal looks interesting– I’ll check it out. Even though I’ve been working in academia and writing sciency papers for years, I’m now more interested in natural history writing. Thus, this blog :)
